THE MEARS FAMILY

I have recently been in contact with Jim Mears who has provided me with additional links back to our early English ancestor, Joseph Mears who married Susan Denton. Joseph had at least one brother named William and a sister, but I do not know their parents at present. Joseph reportedly fought with the British during the Revolution and he must have liked this country because he returned several years later (about 1828, bringing his family with him). He was a grandfather to Ann Mears who married David Marshall, son of Benjamin Marshall and Esther McPeek. They were the Grandparents of Ann Mears who married David Marshall. Ann was five years old when she came to America. They were the parents of William who came to Philadelphia in 1828 and later married Elizabeth Latham. Joseph and Susan were born in England. They also had a brother named Peter who married Lydia Marshall daughter of Benjamin and Esther. The Marshall, McPeek and Mears families lived near each other in Guernsey County and so there were several marriages among the family members.

Joseph's brother, William married Elizabeth Latham. They had two sons, William and Henry. William once owned and lived on Barkefield Farm in Lancaster County, England, where a city now stands. William and Joseph had a sister who had a daughter named Betsy.

In 1850 Elder Mears was appointed by the Ohio Baptist convention to travel as a missionary in this part of the state. For the convenience of the Cambridge Baptists he held a meeting here in town once in every two weeks, and suggested the organization of a church. This was done on June 4, 1851, with the following constituent members:........... Elder Mears preached to the newly organized society for two years. He was succeeded by Rev. B. Y.
