THE MONROE FAMILY

For a long time my information only went back as far as Silas but recently I found 2 more generations through the help of other Monroe researches. I have also learned from the "Pennsylvania Historical Society," that Benjamin was married to Susanna McGuire. He was to enlist on the first call, in May 1775, and served until 1780 under the leadership of General Rufus Putnam, the founder of the first permanent settlement in Ohio at Marietta, who recruited Benjamin in Windham County. An interesting story comes from these records also, which is true. Benjamin was standing guard along the seashore and upon hearing much noise along the shore, he fired a shot, which aroused the entire camp; however, they discovered it was only a porpoise in the water. Benjamin was a second cousin of President James Monroe. A final interesting note on Benjamin is that he had a brother who was a tory.

Silas Monroe was the son of Benjamin and was born in 1788 or 1792. He served in the war of 1812, after which he married Elizabeth Vreeland. They resided for a time in New Jersey, but after the birth of Caroline in 1820, and Silas, Jr. sometime later, they moved by covered wagon to Monroe Township, Licking County, Ohio where they arrived on October 22, 1827 after a two week journey. They purchased land which was formerly owned by Washington Miller. They had five more children in Ohio. After Caroline's marriage to John Dague, they lived on a farm formerly owned by John's father, who had given each of his children a part of his one hundred thirty-one acres of land, in Franklin County. In 1845 they moved onto the land that it was most affectionately called "The Granny Lot." Here they built their new home and raised their children.

In 1868, Henry Monroe bought land from his mother, according to the Licking County Deed records. Later, in the 1900's, Henry's son, Horton Dague, bought the land and moved the house to its present location, and in 1909, he built an addition to the house. Today, the house is still standing, after a period of one hundred thirty years, and has heard the laughter, the joys, and the sorrows of several generations of Monroe ancestors, for more than a century.

Obituary Paulding Co. Republic Newspaper Thursday August 5, 1934, page 5

Former Mayor of Latty dies

William H. Dague, 42, died at his home Southwest of Latty on Thursday, July 26th, after a long illness of heart trouble. Of his immediate family, he is survived by his wife and seven children the oldest being not yet twenty. For a number of years he resided in Latty where he was employed by the Nickel Plate as car inspector and was elected mayor of the village in 1921 by a large majority. It was during his administration that the bond issue for electric lights in the village of Latty was put through and Bill, as he was known to his constituents and large circle of friends, was a hard worker for and it was largely through his efforts that the considerable opposition to the improvement was put down and electric lights in Latty became a reality in the fall of 1922. In 1923, having lost his job through a strike the year previously, he resigned the mayorship and moved his family to Fort Wayne where he was employed by the mechanical department of the Nickel Plate until some six or seven years ago his health forced him to give up the employment and he with the family moved to what is known as the Elijah Carmean place Southwest of Latty where they have since resided. Funeral services were conducted from the Blue Creek church on Monday being delayed to await the hoped arrival of his oldest son, Kenneth G. Dague, who is a member of the CCC and located in Yosemite Park, California. The boy failed to make connections in time to arrive for the funeral and the reamins laid in state at the Crowell Funeral Home In Paulding a few days until his arrival before interment at Blue Creek.
