Francis
(Frank) Arthur Peterman, was a teamster and hauled pipe for early gas lines. He
and his family lived on several farms in the Granville and Johnstown areas. In
1921, they moved to the McLaughlin farm on Hankinson Road north of Granville,
by the big spring. His wife, Blanche Dague Peterman was severely burned in a
housefire in about 1928. She recovered, but the burns left her badly scarred
until her death. Blanche's father, John Dague who was blind, cooked for the
family during her recovery. John and "Jake" (Frank's father) were
good buddies but they argued a lot.
Walter Glenn
Peterman was the oldest son of Frank and Blanche. He and his younger brother
Charles were prangsters. He often told of such things as switching Duck eggs
with Chicken eggs under the setting hens. He and Charles were given BB guns and
they sat on the fence and proceeded to shoot the pigs in the rumps when they
lined up to eat. Their rumps swelled and Grandad "Jake" swore the
pigs had the "Thumps" and they cut their tails off. Walter liked to
trade and in the mid 1930's he traded a hunting dog for a single barrel
shotgun. I remember carving 1937 on it at Christmas time after receiving a
woodburning set. I used the gun to hunt squirrels and rabbits many times. While
I was in the Navy, brother Kenneth used the gun and a friend of his accidently
shot another friend. The gun disappeared after that. Walter's family lived in
several different places during their lives. Among them was the
"Slick" Barber place in the Welsh Hills north of Granville. This home
was just down the road within sight of John W. and Alda Weakley (Parents of
Edith Alice Weakley Peterman.
Frank and
Blanche Peterman lived over the hill on the Starner place and Phil and Bertha
Weakley Philipps (sister of Edith Alice Weakley Peterman) lived in the Philipps
farm home on Philipps Road.
The Walter
Glenn Peterman family moved to Alexandria from the Welsh Hills near Granville,
Ohio in May 1934. It was there that Walter Roland Peterman, a venturesome young
lad, tried to create an electric fence with wire from a broom and other metal.
His mother unplugged it, averting serious injury. It is a wonder he didn't
electrocute himself. He also got kicked by a horse which caused several years
of breathing problems.
Horse and
Buggy and Model T Fords were the principal modes of transportation in those
days. Because the gasoline was gravity fed on the Model T's, they often had to
be backed up the steeper hills. The car was very versatile and often a pulley
was placed on a wheel and the rear end jacked up. The car was then used to
power a buzz saw.
In 1941 Walter
Glenn Peterman moved his family to the Gilliland farm at Croton, Ohio. They only
lived there for about a year and then moved to the Willison farm for a short
time and then to the Homer Booher farm, later purchased by Dick Hogue. Walter
and Alice sold their farm implements and livestock and moved for a short time
to the Spiker place and subsequently bought a home in Croton where they lived
out their lives.
After Walter
Roland Peterman graduated from Hartford High School in Croton, his class took a
trip to Gettysburg, Washington, D.C., and Norfolk. It was a busy time of year
on the farm and his dad hated to see him go but after a strong bit of
persuasion by Roland that he might never get another chance, he was allowed to
go. A month later, he joined the Navy and you guessed it, his first assignment,
was Washington, D.C. His dad never let him forget that. He served with
ComSeventhFlt in 1958-60, and during that time, President Eisenhower came
aboard their ship (USS ST PAUL) for a short time. During that visit, Roland was
responsible for special communications to supprort the President. He retired in
December 1966 as a Senior Chief Communications Technician and worked for a time
at the Goddard Space Center. He loved Amateur Radio and Square Dancing. He
learned to call at square dances in the early 1960's while in the Philippines,
calling and teaching in a local club and calling at Clark AFB, Subic Bay and
the American Embassy in Manila. He quit calling for a while to coach sports for
his children and later picked up the mike again. He founded two clubs in
Woodbridge, Va (one a camping club), and was later retained by the Senior
Citizens of Woodbridge, VA to be their caller. He called at State Conventions
and Washington, DC area festivals several times but the highlights of his
career was the opportunity to participate in several National Square Dance
Conventions including St Louis in 1993, at Charlotte, NC in 1998, at
Indianapolis, Indiana in 1999 and at Baltimore, MD in 2000. On two occasions,
he called for some Japanese Exchange Students at the University of Maryland.
The name
Peterman is apparently German and is sometimes spelled with two N's.
Other Peterman
names which may or may not be related are; Christian Peterman who arrived in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1734 (O471 7820). He obtained 50 acres by
"Quit Rent" in Bristol Township. A Michael Peterman arrived in
Philadelphia in 1750 (9041-P445 and 7820-P241). A Johan Jacob Peterman arrived
from Rotterdam on the Dragon ca September 26, 1749. A Peter Peterman arrived
from Rotterdam on the S. Paliena, last from Cowes ca September 16, 1748.
Another Jacob
Peterman arrived from Rotterdam on the ship "Neptune" on 24
Septembver 1751. The ship's captain was John Mason and the medical doctor in
charge was Clementz Frey. There were 284 passengers. Immigrants were usually
qualified at the Court House, occasionally elsewhere. (P262 7820 - Rupp)
In his book
"Two Hundred Years in Shade Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania; Leroy
Baldwin makes reference to a Michael Peterman and a Daniel Peterman. Michael
Peterman owned land as early as 1814 and later built a Schoolhouse from logs,
on his property. An earlier Daniel Peterman was on a passenger list.
Interestingly,
the name "Jacob" was very common and there are several Jacob's in the
Maryland/Ohio/Pennsylvania areas. I have included the information on one of
them at the bottom of this page.

Notes for JOHN WILLIAM
CUTTER:
From Bowen's
History, 1910con't from page 728:
" John W.
Cutter, of Franklin Twp, Wayne Co., Ohio, is a son of....."John Cutter,
who was born in the state of New Jersey. subsequently, he lived for a number of
years in Pennsylvania, and then in 1818 came to Homles county, Ohio. In 1831 he
moved to Wayne county, where he lived the remaining years of his life, his
death occurring about the year of 1886. The first recorded member of the Cutter
family to come to America was a widow of Samuel Cutter, Elizabeth by name, who
emigrated from England to the New England states of America about 1640.
Among the decendants
of this couple was Samuel, who at the age of twelve years desired to enlist for
services in behalf of the colonist during the war of the Revolution, and was
not permitted to do so because of his youth. He was ardently patroitic in his
attitued and during a long life he took a deep interest in the trend of public
events and he retained even in his old age a remarkably retentive memory of the
scenes and events of the early days. He married a Miss Cole and they became the
parents of several children, namely: Mrs. Susan Robbins, Mrs Lena McHenry, Mrs
Charity Schamp, Samuel, Richard, Ezekiel, Mary , wife of Henry Munson, Mercy,
the wife of Samuel Charlton. The father of these children was a stanch Democrat
in politics. He was carpenter by trade, which vocation he followed in
Pennsylvania, but removing to Ohio he lived a retired life.
Ephriam Cutter came
to Ohio in 1814 and here followed his trade, that of a shoemaker; subsequently
he took up the occupation of farming, locating at North Moorland a number of
years and later for some time living north of Wooster. Later he located in
Hunington county, Indiana
John Cutter followed
farming all the days of his active life and on coming to Ohio he entered a
large tract of land, the patent for which bore the
signature of
President Jackson. He proceeded to clear this land of the dense timber which
covered it and developed a fine farm, on which he lived untio his death, whihc
occured there in 1886. His wife had preceded him to the unseen land, dying in
1868. Their remains lie buried in the graveyard which lies near the Methodist
Episcopal church in Moorland. John Cutter was noted because of his many acts of
charity, his benevolence being much appreciated during those early pioneer
days. He was a stanch Democrat in his political views, but never accepted
public office of any nature. He and his wife were the parents of children:
Elizabeth, unmarried; Ephrian, James Brown, Mrs. Peter Wicker, Mrs. William
Scott. The subject of this sketch, John W. Cutter, was born on January 19, 1843,
and spent his early days with his parents. He secured a limited education in
the district schools, his vaction periods being devoted to work on the farm. He
has always followed the agricultural pursuits and has been fairly successful,
being accounted one of the successful farmers of his section. is farm is
characterized by splendid buildings, well kept fences, modern macheinery and
other accessories of an up-to-date farm. Mr. Cutter show sound judgement in his
operations, keeping in touch with the most advanced methods relating to the
service of agriculture and his consequently been enabled to realize handsome
returns for the labor he has bestowed. On June 6, 1872, Mr. Cutter was married
to Margaret A. Cellar, who was born March 1, 1846, in Holmes county, this
state, a daughter of Joseph and Phoebe (Corn) Cellar. Her parents were natives
of Pennsylvania, where they were married, and they came to Holmes county in
1824, making their home there during the remainder of their lives. Mrs.
Cutter's paternal grand father, Ephraim Cellar, was a veterna of the war of
1812, after the conclusion of which he went to Jefferson county, Ohio, and
thence to Indiana, where he died. Mrs Cutter's maternal grandfather was William
Corn, who was born near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but later came to Holmes
coutny, Ohio, where he spent his remaining years and died. To Mr and Mrs.
Cutter have been born the following children: Morris E., who died young; Joseph
C. of Franklin Township, married Della Scott, and they have seven children:
Blanche, Maude, Mildred, Norma, Susan, William and Mabel. William L. of Lorain
Ohio, married Bertha Scott, and they have had five children: Marcella, Helen,
Ruth, Catherine, and on that died in infancy unamed. Ira C. is the wife of John
Wirt, of Franklin Township, and they have one child, Kenneth; Mabel and Myrtle,
twins. Myrtle married LeRoy Sparr, of Franklin township; two children, Francis
and Robert. Martha V. is still under parental roof.Mr. Cutter is a Democrat in
politics and has ever taken an intelligent interest in local public affaird,
though he has been in no sense an office seeker. HIs many splendid qualities of
character have won for him the unbounded confidence and regard of all with whom
he has associated. He was elceted county commissioner in 1898, took the office
in 1899 and held it until 1902. He was also for thiry years a member of the
school board, and served efficiently as township trustee. Fraternally he is a
member of the Nation Congress and the Masons. The family all belong to the
Methodist Episcopal church.

Notes for JAMES PETERMAN:
James, like the majority of the early
pioneers' sons, was raised on a farm, where
he grew up a self-reliant, energetic man. In
1828, at the age of 23 years, he bade
farewell to friends and home and started out
to earn a home for himself with empty hands and empty pockets. He crossed the
Allegheny mountains on foot and alone, his rifle being his only companion. ...
He was a useful, honored, upright man ... he discharged his duties with credit
to himself and his friends. He was a great reader and thinker and a member of
the Presbyterian church many years.
