Well, I thought I would be writing my final article for the Calls 'n Cues
and for this web page, but it looks like I am going to be around for another
year. There are so many great dances going on from time to time, but there is
still nothing like a good local dance. It is so easy to get locked in to a
routine of dancing only at one or two clubs. Of course, you should always
support your local club, but why not try to visit other clubs. In fact,
try a personal goal of one new club per month. You will meet new friends,
have a lot of fun and will be glad you did it. Your club and local
associations such as VASARDA and WASCA, need your help too; so, why not contact
your club president or call your WASCA or VASARDA staff to see where your
volunteer services might be expended? New classes in the area continue to
progress and with it, a group of new dancers filled with energy and excitement.
Can you remember when you first began dancing, how excited you were, and the
butterfly’s you experienced at the first dance you attended outside your normal
ring of friends? Remember too, how you felt when you made a mistake and
sometimes received a disapproving glare from ”an old hand”? Remember to do unto
others as you would have them do to you and display patience and encouragement
along with an approving smile to the less experienced dancers. If you do, most
likely, you will have gained a new friend; but, more importantly, you will
likely see them more frequently at other dances, improving their dancing skills.
And now a message for the men….I have been calling square dances for a long time
and I often look out and see ladies dancing the man’s part, seldom the reverse.
I wonder why that is! Do you suppose it has anything to do with our preference
to sit in our easy chair glued to the TV while the ladies are being active?
Ladies, my hat goes off to you! That is most likely why you outlive us men. Men,
if you want to help reverse this trend, encourage your male friends to join you
at the next class in your area. But then, if we outnumber the ladies, then that
means one of us might be asked to dance the ladies part. Nah, I guess it is
easier to recline in front of the TV. Point to Ponder until next time. Walt
Peterman, President NCASDLA
