Shoults, sometimes appearing as Shulls, Shoulse, etc.
A George Shoults appears on ship records as arriving in Philadelphia, PA. in 1731 (9041 P55), is he related? I have found a family of Shouse who settled in Kentucky but there appears to be no connection. One of the best leads is a John Shoultz who settled in Augusta County, Virginia and appears to have tied to the Lancaster area of Pennsylvania. He possibly is related?
Our George H. Shoults and Content (One source suggests her name may have been Adams) were married in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. Content appears in Coshocton County Ohio 1820 census as Shulls. We know that "Content" sued "George" for divorce in 1823, but he does not appear in the 1820 census for Washington Township, Coshocton County. The story has it that he wanted to return to Pennsylvania and she didn't want to go, so he left her and the children, never heard from again. In her will dated 13 February 1837, Book C, she names children: Lucy, Sarah, Sampson, Peter, John, May Shutt (?) and Eliza Kinsey. Content is buried in Chalfant Cemetery near the town of Wakatomika in Coshocton County, Ohio. Her son Thomas is buried beside her.
Sampson B. Shoults came to Ohio from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, probably with his parents before 1840, and undoubtedly before 1820. He married Elizabeth Miller. They had twelve children, two of whom fought and died in the civil war. We believe Sampson moved to Licking County ca 1850 (Mary Ann Township) and to the home place on the Wakatomika River (Creek) in 1862, where he purchased two farms. He later gave one of the farms to Willis Hamilton and Eliza Jane Shoults. The farm where he resided, was deeded to John Wesley and George Shoults. The Shoults bridge was built ca 1877. Unfortunately, like many cemeteries, vandals delight in placing their graffiti on the bridge and doing other destructive things. The approximately 125 year old bridge still stands as pictured here.

Additional pictures portraying vandalism to the bridge are illustrated on the Ohio Covered Bridge site CLICK HERE
Sam Miller, believed to be Elizabeth Miller's brother, did the mason work and
Robert Smith did the carpenter work. Willis Hamilton Shoults died at an early
age, he left Eliza Jane Meek Shoults - a Grand Old Lady - to care for six small
children, three girls and three boys; Lester being the youngest, was about one
year old on his father's death. Alda Mae Shoults was the youngest of the girls.
Eliza Jane (Meek) Shoults had an old rug weaver which she used to weave rugs.
She made rag carpets for people. She sold butter and eggs and raised potatoes
and garden items to feed her family. They raised corn and hay for the horses.
As a young girl, she rode horseback (side-saddle) to Newark, Ohio around 1862
to see President Abraham Lincoln. When Lester died all of the property was
sold. The old house was burned, but the other buildings remained standing until
they collapsed from the ravages of time. Lester wore high leather boots and had
a beautiful horse, called "Topsy", which he rode to town and to get
around. An annual Shoults reunion has been held since 1922.
It is said that Willis Hamilton Shoults could not read nor write. When he died, his widow continued to reside on the land given them by Sampson Shoults where she raised her six children weaving rugs and selling vegetables.
See the Weakley family for descendants of John William Weakley, Jr. and Alda Mae Shoults.

10, 2011 in Newark, Ohio, at noon in a place TBD.
