THE
SWARTZWELDER FAMILY
We are just beginning our research with this branch of the family. Thanks
to Steve Swartzwelder and William A. Schaller, we have obtained a lot of data
recently.
Some family reports have it that the Swartzwelders were originally
Blackwelders and came from the Black Forest area of Germany. I do not believe
the name Blackwelder was ever a part of the family heritage. However, the
German name for the Black Forest is/was Schwarzwald and the family name is/was
Schwarzwalder. Later changes in the spelling were due to English translation.
The earliest Swartzwelder that we have been able to definitely link was Peter
Swartzwelder. Early records showed the spelling as Swarsvilder and Swarzvilder.
According to the will of Frederick Storts, dated March 15, 1783, Frederick
Storts lived in Bethel Township; Bedford County, PA.; his widow was Sebela
Storts. He speaks of Peter Swarzvilder as his stepson and refers to Frederick
Swarsvilder as a minor son of Peter. In the will, he directs wife Sebela and
Peter Swarzvilder to care for a minor named George Kisenger until he is
eighteen years of age. He also willed property to his brother's children
(though he doesn't name his brother); Mary Swarzvilder, George Storts and
Charlotte Storts. Frederick didn't sign the will, but used his mark.
On May the 20th of May 1785, in response to a Warrant granted to Peter
Swarsvilder dated the 3rd day of January 1785; Peter purchased a tract of 326
acres which was called Petersburg for 5 pounds and 12 schillings. The property,
located in Bethel Township; Bedford County, PA; was bounded by vacant hills and
the following property owners. Jacob Bateman, Jacob Winks and widow Mellot to
the Northwest. Vacant hills to the Northeast, Abraham Chopmas (sp) to the
Southwest, William Woods to the Southeast and Peter Rouhs to the South. In this
document, the name of Peter Swarsvilder and Peter Swarswilder were both used.
The history of Fulton County, PA states that the old township was Belfast, from
which several townships were later carved. Peter Swartzwelder was listed as a
resident on the tax list of 1785.
Frederick's will of 1848 in Monroe township, leaves his property to his
widow, Hannah, sons Philip, Joseph, Daniel and Evan, daughters Julisnn, Hannah,
Caroline and Margaret.
Evan's will dated 1 February 1865 in Monroe township shows the present day
spelling for Swartzwelder and leaves his property to his widow Susanna and
daughter Paulina and son Emmanual. A minor by the name of James Dunn is also
mentioned and placed in the custody of Emmanual.
In his will dated April 28, 1840, Peter (son of Frederick) refers to his
wife Elizabeth, son Nathaniel and daughters Mary Jane, Mary Anne, Hannah and
Carline. He named his wife Elizabeth and brother Daniel as his executors. Again
the spelling of Swartzwelder was the same as modern day spelling and it appears
that spelling was used from then on.
Daniel Swartzwelder's will uses the present day spelling. It is dated
October 18, 1884. He named his son Daniel as executor and named his wife Rachel
and sons Daniel and William and daughter Amanda J. Swartzwelder Miller and her
children, Charles, Daniel, Jennie, Rachel and Harry in his will.
In Philip Swartzwelder's will dated November 9, 1894 in East Providence
Township lists his wife Lousina; sons, Clyde Bertram, Charles Ross, Semore
Blair, James Sherman and Ritner Ernest and daughters, Ada Viola, Alice Selena,
Sedona Agnes and Margaret Jane. It also indicates that Semore Blair lived in
Buffalo Mills, Pa and Ritner Ernest at Rays Hill, PA at the time of the will.
In the will of Ritner Ernest Swartzwelder dated October 19, 1916 in East
Providence Township, PA all of his estate was left to his widow Tillie and upon
her death to be equally divided among his children; except, that an
appraisement of the property was to be done and if Harry Owen wished to
purchase the property at the appraised price, he could arrange to do so giving
his brother and sister their share by payments. No mention is made of Nathan
Grant nor Mary L; however, Mary signified on the will on April 16, 1934 that
she received the sum of one dollar in full payment of her legacy from Tillie
Swartzwelder.
This we do know; our recent ancestors were farmers living in the
Breezewood, Pennsylvania area. The farming continued and was handed down until
operational costs became excessive and most of the farming ceased. Descendents
still own some of the farmland.

Notes for MARY MATILDA HIXSON:
By Walter R. Peterman
"Grandma" Swartzwelder was a sweet and delightful lady. My wife
Jean thought the world of her grandmother. "Grandma" always said she
did not want to go to the hospital as she knew she wouldn't come out alive. Her
thoughts came true as she fell and broke her hip and was admitted to the
hospital. She never recovered. We visited her in Everett Hospital just before
she died. This was right after our middle son, Keith Alan Peterman was born
(April 8, 1957) Her lips and tongue were badly swollen and she could hardly
speak but she whispered to me, "Where there's a Will, there's a way."
A humorous memory. Jean and I were married in 1949 and in 1950, moved into
an apartment in Northeast Washington, DC. Sometime between 1950 and 1952,
"Grandma" Swartzwelder came and spent some time with us. We had
purchased our first TV (a table model Motorola). At that time, we watched a lot
of wrestling matches on TV. "Grandma" sat watching the TV in a rocker
and the more excited she got, the faster she rocked. She pointed her finger at
one of the wrestlers and said "Don't let him do that to you, hit him
back," and "Look out behind you."
