THE WILLIAMSON FAMILY

Much of the Williamson genealogy is contained in the "Green" book written by Robert Green, Jr. Additional information was compiled by Roy Lee Peterman.

The first factual history of the Williamsons comes from the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization, Justice Department, Washington, D. C. Here may be found records of five Williamsons by the names of James, John, Joseph, William and Annie dated July 25, 1635, stating that these five sailed into the Chesapeake Bay and down the Potomac River to Harper's Ferry. The family had come to the colonies seeking adventure which was not to be found in the Williamson home (Kent Hall) in England. The biggest praise bestowed on these five came from the government records which stated; "They had an element of manhood far above the average, and they were the most fearless, robust men that ever landed in America." The above statement may be found at the Ohio State Library, in Columbus, Ohio. A John Williamson was born around 1715. One of his brothers was Hugh Williamson who was born in Pennsylvania, a doctor and good friend of Benjamin Franklin. He joined Franklin in several electrical experiments. Hugh later moved to North Carolina and became a delegate to the Constitutional Convention and signed the Constitution. He was a member of congress from 1790 to 1793 and later moved to New York. His nephew Colonel Hugh Williamson (by some accounts he is referred to as David), was in command of the Moravian Indian Massacre at Gnadenhutten, Tuscarawas County, Ohio in 1782. John II Williamson married Peggy Annon, the daughter of General Joseph Annon of Ireland. They had tree sons and later came to Johnstown Ohio. John II's name appears on 1800 Berkely County assessment records. He assessed 160 acres to Peter in 1789. Peter married Rebecca Green, the daughter of Reginal Green, Sr. in 1780. Peter was an indian fighter and survivor of St. Clair's defeat. He bought 100 acres in 1806 and moved his family to this farm two miles South of Johnstown, Ohio where he was laid to death with his wife after their death. Peter's son Joseph Annon Williamson was born on August 31, 1804 and died on March 16, 1899. He was thought to have had about twenty-two children. His first wife was Sophie Randolph who bore him eight children. His second marriage was to Rachel Hartsock in 1848. she was born on April 1, 1828 and died June 15, 1921. They raised nine children, one of whom - Angeline, married William Dague. They are the parents of Blanche Vesta Dague Peterman, and four other children before Angeline's death.
