These are the sites which are exceptionally good due to their
breadth, being up-to-date, receiving a lot of traffic, and other
considerations. These are marked as resource for
information sites, archive for Software Archive, and Collection
for a collection of software not having its own download space.
InterGuru (resource)
- Founded in 1996, this is a truly great resource for
converting Address Books. Lists manual methods and
software converters.
Ziff Davis USA,
Deutschland,
India,
Italia, and UK (collection/resource)
- Ziff Davis sites have online versions of magazines and
resources on a variety of topics. Their collection is also
impressive and generally up-to-date
eMail Man(resource)
- Founded in 1995, this is a source for all things
E-Mail. Contains a good section on conversion.
C|Net's download.com
(collection) - Originally a good old independent
site, this site (as well as the site above) was acquired
by C|Net. It is a massive site with a large collection of
software, maybe too large for their own good
SlipStick(resource)
- Founded in 1994, this is a good E-Mail conversion resource
Winsite(archive)
- This archive has begun its existence when Windows
was young and emerged as a separate entity (apart from
the DOS archive that it was before) in 1995. The site is
as up-to-date and upbeat as ever
NoNags (collection)
- Founded in 1995, this site has an impressive free
list and an archive on a fast download server for paying
subscribers. They also don't list any "nagware"
which makes for a more pleasant browsing experience.
SimTel(archive) -
This old-timer is still alive and well today and has an
impressive list of mirrors
File Forum (collection) - Founded in 1995, this collection
allows you to find software and discuss it on their
message boards
Dave Central (collection)
- Part of the OSDN network, this collection presents a large number of
human-gathered applications.
Other sites of note - Software Archives
These sites host files on their own servers. The number of
these sites is decreasing fast, but these are the few newcomers
to the field (The surviving old-timers are part f the Dawn Top
Ten above)
Rocket Download
- A recent entry into the archives scene, this archive
features a sizable selection, but is hampered by outdated
listings and a clumsy submission process.
Skali - Created in
1997, this relatively new archive's twelve categories
prove too few for the number of programs contained in
them
Other sites of note - Software Collections
These do not host the software, but index and categorize it
Version tracker - Founded in 1999, this is an
impressively large software collection
ListSoft (English
Version) - From my homeland (I'm originally from
Russia), this site is a good catalog (Russian Version)
SoftPile(collection) -
Another fine collection that also has a newsletter available
Super Files -
Founded in 1996, this site is over
10,000 files strong, or so they claim
