Winterhawks claim points crown
The Portland Winterhawks finished the season with a 64-15-3
record to claim the points crown with an impressive 131 points. This is
the third highest total in league history. Surprisingly, it is not the
franchise record. In the 94-95 season, the Portland Seasmoke (based in
Maine, not Oregon) put up 136 points to record the second highest point
total of all time. In that same season, the Saratoga Blades recorded
140 points to set the league standard. The Blades beat the Seasmoke in
the Gump Cup final that year, in a true "battle of the Titans".

Kovalchuk shatters
Gump League goal record
Ilya Kovalchuk punctuated an impressive
Portland Winterhawks season by scoring 96 goals, thus setting the Gump
League record. The previous record was held by Brendan Shanahan, who
potted 75 goals in the 93-94 season. Jarome Iginla finished second in
the goal race with 81, but managed to edge Kovalchuk for the points
title, with 171. This is also a record for the Gump League, with the
former mark being 153 by Pat Lafontaine, also in the inaugural 93-94
season.
