Week Three:  Measurement in Social Research

Chat Room Discussions:  Sunday at 8 and Tuesday at 9:15.

To pose a question for Ted Goertzel or Ron Passarella, use the Questions and Private Messages link.  Put your question in "Questions" so others can also see the answer.  This is less chaotic than chat where your question may be lost.

This week will focus on conceptualization and measurement.  The main focus will be on levels of measurement.

Assignments
  1. Due by 10 a.m. on September 29.  Measurement Quiz Week Three . You may take this quiz three times and the highest score will count.  It covers Chapter Five in Babbie, except for the section on reliability and validity.
  2. Due by 2 p.m. on October 1.  This week's Microcase Exercise is online, open it here and do the problems before going to SAKAI It is based on page 159 of the Ayers book, but I expended the categories.  Enter your answers into SAKAI "LevelsofMeasurementExercise".

Reading:
  1. Babbie, Chapter Five.  We will not cover the section on reliability and validity this week but there's no harm in reading it as it will come later.
  2. Ayers, pages 145-154.
Course Materials and Notes:
  1. A powerpoint on Measurement is in Sakai/Resources/Week Three.  The same presentation can be viewed on the internet here.  I think you will find this very useful.  There is also a narrated version.
