McCann, died early on the morning of 13 January 2002 at a 2 CONC ge 85. She was first hospitalized for a flare up of her chronic pulmon 2 CONC ary illness the Sunday before Christmas, and did well that week. She w 2 CONC as discharged home on 27 December 2001. Early on 28 December 2001 a bo 2 CONC ut of breathlessness prompted her to call 911, something she never need 2 CONC ed to do previously, so she was readmitted to the hospital. She was ve 2 CONC ntilated and in intensive care from that day until 2 January 2002. 2 CONT 2 CONT Our mother was very aware and sharing from the day she was breathing in 2 CONC dependently again until late the Friday before she died, when we decide 2 CONC d to sedate her according to her wishes to ensure a peaceful death. He 2 CONC r breathing was becoming more labored and the sedation was necessary to k 2 CONC eep her comfortable and relaxed. She was ready for death, and said all h 2 CONC er farewells. She died as she lived with much strength and faith. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mary Ellen and a nurse friend were with her when she died, although Mar 2 CONC y Ellen was asleep. She did not hover, because she wanted our mother t 2 CONC o be free to let go. All of us were with her for a good deal of her fi 2 CONC nal days. 2 CONT 2 CONT Her funeral was 16 January 2002, and it was lovely. There was a choir, a c 2 CONC antor, an organist, and a violinist. Her grandchildren Harry and Jim J 2 CONC r were two of the pall bearers, as were her nephew/godson Tommy Bartlet 2 CONC t, our father's nephew Brendan McCann, and some other friends of ours. H 2 CONC er daughters-in-law, Karen and Rosemary, daughter Mary Ellen, and grand 2 CONC son Jim's wife Elizabeth placed the pall (white cloth) on her coffin. 2 CONT 2 CONT Her grandson Miles and Mary Ellen did the readings, and Harry, Miles, a 2 CONC nd Janeclare presented the bread and wine. Her great-grandson Sean att 2 CONC ended, so all the generations were represented fully, except for great- 2 CONC granddaughter Sophia, who is still too young at age 3. Our mother is b 2 CONC uried next to our father in Westfield, NJ. 2 CONT 2 CONT The funeral processional was called “Lord of all Hopefulness.” We chos 2 CONC e it for its second phrase “Lord of all joy,” because my mother mention 2 CONC ed that she hoped one of her last words would be joy. The other music i 2 CONC ncluded hymns she and my father had played at their wedding: Ave Maria a 2 CONC nd Panis Angelicus. (from 21st September, 1885) decided to change the rules for p 2 CONC romotion in the force. Up to that date the Catholics were discriminated a 2 CONC gainst when the sought promotion. Prior to that while the bulk of the f 2 CONC orce was Catholic, no Catholic would be promoted officers. Read brought i 2 CONC n a ruling that 60 men that were successful in the Sergeants Exam and w 2 CONC ho were Catholic would be promoted each year. The Officers who were tot 2 CONC ally Non Catholic were against this. They saw that over a number of yea 2 CONC rs with the 60 Catholics promoted each year that the day would come whe 2 CONC n the bulk of the rank of Sergeants would be Catholic. That would mean t 2 CONC hat a Catholic would be giving orders to Non Catholics & worst still Or 2 CONC angemen and that caused consternation. The Non Catholics turned against R 2 CONC ead and forced him out of the force, but the “60”rule continued. That i 2 CONC s how Michael came to be promoted. It is now agreed 120 years later, th 2 CONC at Read was the best head of the RIC in the 100 years that it lasted. 2 CONT 2 CONT Looking at the record of Michael McCann, he did very well for himself i 2 CONC n the 23 years he was in the force. He attained the rank of Head Consta 2 CONC ble by the age of 40, and his pension was £4 10s 0d per week, and beari 2 CONC ng in mind that a weeks wages for a working man at that time was £2 per w 2 CONC eek, Michael was in clover with his pension, more than double his neigh 2 CONC bours. There were drawbacks as well. Retired RIC men living in the Free S 2 CONC tate kept a low profile. They were regarded as the defeated enemy and a 2 CONC ccordingly lived quiet lives, not attracting attention to themselves. S 2 CONC ome of the RIC would have liked to join the Garda Force, but the Garda m 2 CONC embers would not have them. This was understandable as most of the new G 2 CONC ardai were former IRA men that had fought in the War of Independence an 2 CONC d the RIC was the enemy. Around 200 RIC transferred to the Garda Force, b 2 CONC ut they were men who acted as agents for Michael Collins in the RIC, an 2 CONC d that was why they were accepted. With the excellent pensions the reti 2 CONC red men could afford to sit back and take life easy. The retired men we 2 CONC re always ambitious for the education of their families. In the years f 2 CONC rom 1930/50 the sons & to a lesser extent daughters of the RIC were in g 2 CONC ood positions in the Civil Service, but they were not anxious to let it b 2 CONC e known that they were the offspring of RIC men. In N. Ireland the posi 2 CONC tion was different. Former RIC men could join the new police force RUC a 2 CONC nd hold on to the rank they held in the RIC. A great number did join, i 2 CONC f they were Catholic and had the rank of Sergeant, they were sent to a C 2 CONC atholic area in the border region. He was a herd in the Mulock Estate in Kilnagarna, also in Le 2 CONC managhan Parish. He was not a native of the parish, and the name Nestor w 2 CONC as not in Griffiths Valuation for Kilnagarna in 1854. Neither was the n 2 CONC ame in the Census of 1901 for the same area. Looki 2 CONC ng at the Christian names of Pat & Mary's family the names are normal n 2 CONC ames for the times when they were born, except Sylvester, a name rarely u 2 CONC sed in the area. 2 CONT 2 CONT I then studied the surnames in the Parish of Tubber and I came upon a b 2 CONC irth dated April 1836, Patrick Nestor son of Sylvester Nestor & Mary Me 2 CONC alif. I feel that the Patrick in this case is your great great grandfat 2 CONC her, and if this is so you now have the names of your grear great great g 2 CONC randparents. I am basing my belief because of the Christian name Sylves 2 CONC ter. 2 CONT 2 CONT I could not find any deaths of the name Nestor in Kilnagarna, during th 2 CONC e period 1864/1900, and this adds to my belief that the family did not s 2 CONC tay too long in the Kilnagarna area. There is a big number of marriages & b 2 CONC irth of the name Nestor in Tubber Parish, and it is possible that the K 2 CONC ilnagarna family were buried in Tubber. I have no proof of this. Tubber i 2 CONC s some 5 miles or so away from Kilnagarna. 2 CONT Because the family moved away from the area, not much is known about th 2 CONC em now. I spoke to a local lady who is very good in her ability to talk a 2 CONC bout the past. You must remember that the time I speak about is 120/140 y 2 CONC ears ago and big changes have taken place in that area. 2 CONT 2 CONT The major change was the fall of the Estate System in Ireland c 105 ye 2 CONC ars ago, this ment the Mulock Estate was taken over by the Land Commiss 2 CONC ion, and dived up among the tenants, and the present owners of the land t 2 CONC end to be the grandchildren of the tenants 100 years ago. The following i 2 CONC s what I found out from this lady. 2 CONT (1) Pat was a herd in Kilnagarna Estate, with the use of a cottage and a 2 CONC n acre of land. This was a good perk, but if you lost your job, you los 2 CONC t your house. 2 CONT (2) Two sons Pat & Sylvester went to US. 2 CONT (3) A daughter Mary (born 1861) married Andrew Donohoe 01/11/1880, Andr 2 CONC ew was also from Kilnagarna, and the witnesses at the marriage were Edw 2 CONC ard Darby & Bridget Cantwell. I traced the birth of a daughter of Andre 2 CONC w & Mary, called Bridget ,born 1882, with an address Kilnagarna. No oth 2 CONC er births were traced to this pair. 2 CONT (4) Another daughter Catherine (born 1863) married 30/03/1886, Thomas D 2 CONC eehan, who was from Straduff, and was s/o Patrick Deehan. The witnesses t 2 CONC o this marriage were Francis McLoughlin & Ellen Nestor. Straduff is als 2 CONC o a neighbouring townland. 2 CONT (5) It was reported to me that Pat (Jr) was also a herd, but he must ha 2 CONC ve given up the job, and may have gone to US. 2 CONT (6) The place the family had in Kilnagarna is now owned by the Egan Fam 2 CONC ily. Egan was & is still a very popular name in the area, and all the E 2 CONC gan families had a nickname to denote each family.
