Fluids obtained locally tend to be cheaper than mail order fluids, in some cases much cheaper.  Buying IV admin sets and disposable needles locally, however, is more problematic.  Some folks buy their fluids locally and obtain IV admin sets and needles from mail order vendors such as BRICO Medical Supplies, Direct Medical and others. If you're looking for a local source of supply, find the appropriate NDC Codes and call or visit local pharmacies. Most pharmacies will be able to obtain fluids from their wholesaler overnight but it's not something they order regularly. For example, my local CVS/pharmacy here in Arlington, VA, wanted $235 for a case of Abbott Labs LRS when I first asked. That same pharmacy will now sell me a case of LRS for $15-25.  The trick was persuading the pharmacist to double check the price with his wholesaler.  Folks have had success finding fluids at $15-$26 per case at the local pharmacies listed below.  Use the listings here as a starting point for your own search.  And if you're successful finding fluids at a reasonable price, please email me with the details so that I can post them for all.  --  David Jacobson, Arlington, VA

"We just called Wal-Mart Pharmacy in Renton, WA.  The pharmacist said they did not have it and that it is very difficult to order, and we should call medical supplies places.  Even when told that this Wal-Mart was listed on the Internet as a source for LRS, he just kept saying to go to a medical supplies place.  Apparently, he just id not want to bother.  (12/31/03 email) Note from David:  I followed up with a Wal-Mart regional pharmacy a week after receiving this e-mail.  He apologized, said that any Wal-Mart pharmacy was able to supply IV fluids and told me he was taking steps to ensure that this never happened again, at least in his region.
