[update 8/31] The site has been taken down I'm assuming from bandwidth limitations (which is astounding for a Gene Wolfe site). Wynn intends to find a new server.

Map of the Whorl is a recent site by James Wynn dedicated to exploring the Long Sun series. Lots of good thought-provoking background information plus mytholicical, and religious connections. I particulalrly like his exploration of the Inhuma. A startling claim is made about Hyacinth. Unfortunately it does not contain a map of the Whorl.

Gene Wolfe will be at Worldcon 2002 in San Jose this weekend. He is participating in the following sessions
  • "Working with Damon Knight", at Thursday 1:00pm

  • Kaffee Klatsch Friday 11:30am

  • "Making Characters Live in Their Worlds", Friday 1:00pm

  • "Religion and Fantasy", Saturday 4:00pm
He will also be doing an autograph session at 1pm on Sunday. My apologies to those of you who are recieving the information too late to make plans.

Wolfe will be attending the World Fantasy convention Oct 31 - Nov 3 in Minniapolis, Minnesota, though I have no information on his program participation at this time. My in-laws live in Minniapolis/St. Paul so I'm making the trip this year.

We believe that we invent symbols. The truth is that they invent us; we are their creatures, shaped by their hard, defining edges. When soldiers take their oath they are given a coin, an asimi stamped with the profile of the Autarch. Their acceptance of that coin is their acceptance of the special duties and burdens of military life--they are soldiers from that moment, though they may know nothing of the management of arms. I did not know that then, but it is a profound mistake to believe that we must know of such things to be influenced by them, and in fact to believe so is to believe in the most debased and superstitious kind of magic. The would-be sorcerer alone has faith in the efficacy of pure knowledge; rational people know that things act of themselves or not at all.
The Shadow of the Torturer, Gene Wolfe.
